Uncharted: Zendaya Thought Tom Holland’s New Movie Sounded Ridiculous

The first time Tom Holland tried to explain his new movie Uncharted to Zendaya, she thought it seemed rather ridiculous. Fresh off the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland will return to the big screen next week with Uncharted, the long-awaited movie adaptation of the hit video game series. Uncharted has endured a lengthy development process, changing hands and release dates so many times that fans began to doubt its existence. Finally, the movie has gotten off the ground with director Ruben Fleischer at the helm and Holland in the lead role of Nathan Drake.

Uncharted isn’t looking to jump headfirst into the games’ lore just yet, with the story actually being a prequel. Holland’s Drake is still early on in his treasure-hunting career, and the promise of long-lost gold from hundreds of years ago is what kicks off this adventure. Uncharted will show Drake’s first meeting with his future mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Walberg) and find him going up against a ruthless, more experienced treasure hunter (Antonio Banderas). The movie also stars Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle.

Fans of the games are well-versed in all the thrills and twists of Uncharted, but those who aren’t familiar with the games might be baffled by what it has to offer. Case in point: Holland’s MCU co-star and girlfriend Zendaya. Speaking during a recent appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show (via Virgin Radio UK), Holland recalled the moment he told Zendaya about a particularly crazy Uncharted stunt. It’s safe to say her reaction wasn’t what he expected. Holland said:

“I did have a hilarious moment on the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home, because we shot that directly after shooting Uncharted. And I was sitting down with Zendaya, and I was trying to explain to her what Uncharted was about. And I was like, ‘There’s this stunt I did where I fell out of an aeroplane… well, I get hit by a car that is falling out of an aeroplane,’ And she was like, ‘Wait, what? How on earth does that happen? This film sounds ridiculous!’ And I was like, ‘You have to wait and see the film. It makes sense when you see the film, but me explaining it to you makes no sense at all!’”

The Uncharted stunt Holland was referring to was glimpsed in the trailer; a car knocks Drake out of the back of an airplane, sending him into free fall. Holland said that car stunt resulted in him being hit 17 times, which he admitted he was actually proud of. All told, Uncharted‘s stunts are the hardest ones the actor has ever had to complete (per his own words), so even if they sound rather absurd on paper, they are bound to look really cool. Hopefully, Zendaya got to see the finished product to understand what Holland was trying to describe.

Zendaya’s immediate reaction to Uncharted might not be that far off from how fans responded when they heard the movie would be a prequel centered on a younger Drake. It still isn’t quite clear how audiences will respond to this adaptation, but Holland’s enthusiasm for the project has gone a long way in drumming up excitement. Uncharted offers the opportunity for Holland to show off his action skills and slip into a brand new character, and it’ll be interesting to see how it all comes together.
