10 Stefan And Damon: Stefan’s Sacrifice

Although Stefan’s sacrifice was painful, it was his decision. For the first time in years, Stefan saw the older brother he had when the boys were human and wanted Elena to get to know that version of his brother.

Stefan died for a variety of reasons, but the most important one was Damon. He would instead his brother get the chance to live than himself, and died to give Damon a human future. Vampire Diaries fans were split amongst their opinions regarding the series finale. However, if Stefan was going to give up his life for Damon, it was a fair conclusion that Damon would continue to live. He continued this life as a human and grew old with Elena.

9 Klaus And Elijah: They Died Together

Initially, Stefan and Damon were meant to die together in The Vampire Diaries. However, circumstances prevented that ending from coming to fruition. Instead, Klaus and Elijah received that conclusion at the end of The Originals. Elijah had spent his entire life trying to find redemption for Klaus.

With Hayley having died, and Klaus sacrificing himself for Hope, Elijah did not find any reason to stick around. Klaus and Elijah were the closest to each other, and their bond developed as the years went by. After everything they had gone through, it made sense that the two would die together.

8 Stefan And Damon: Became Human

Although Stefan had forced Damon to transition into a vampire, neither truly loved being one. Stefan’s ripper tendencies made it challenging for him to be as strong as Damon or several other vampires that drank human blood. Damon may have claimed to love being a vampire during his relationship with Elena, but initially, he had not wanted to become one without Katherine.

It fitted that both brothers would return to their human states before the series ended. Although The Cure was forced upon each of them, they still got to live a human life. As a human, Stefan married Caroline shortly before his death, and knowing what he was about to do, ensured that Damon got to live a human life.

7 Klaus And Elijah: Elijah Saw To Klaus’ Redemption

Similar to Stefan, Elijah was driven by his desire for his brother to redeem himself from wrongdoings. Staying in New Orleans to raise Klaus and Hayley’s baby was Elijah’s idea and hoped that it would bring the Mikaelson family back together. Forced to spend years apart, Klaus revealed to Caroline that he is no good with Elijah.

Elijah may have considered the most significant moment of his life to be when Klaus had redeemed himself, as that had been what Elijah had devoted his entire life to. When Klaus planned to die for his family, Elijah chose to die with him, feeling that his job was over.

6 Stefan And Damon: Fates Revealed

When Stefan dies, he gets the opportunity to share one last goodbye with Elena before officially moving on. Entering Peace, Stefan is greeted by Lexi and then continues to have a peaceful existence in the afterlife. However, the series went another step forward, revealing the fates of Damon and Elena as well.

While Elena would reunite with her parents, aunt, and uncle, Damon would return to Stefan. The Salvatore Brothers came back together at the end, and viewers got to know that they would see each other again. Klaus and Elijah do not get the same courtesy. Their deaths end the series, and no one learns their fates until the Necromancer tells Hope that Klaus would not find peace until she did during Legacies.

5 Klaus And Elijah: The Goodbye Dinner

Stefan’s death is too quick and unplanned for his friends and Damon to wish him goodbye. However, since Klaus was planning on dying to destroy the Hollow, he has one last chance to spend a meal with his family as a way to say goodbye.

Klaus has a reconciling moment with Kol as the Mikaelsons sit around the table, telling stories and laughing before Klaus and Elijah end their lives forever. While that may not have removed the hurt of knowing their relatives would never see them again, it gave them a happy memory to hold on to for the future.

4 Stefan And Damon: Saved Their Hometown

Stefan and Damon Salvatore grew up in Mystic Falls, Virginia, before turning into vampires in 1864. Throughout the years, they made short return trips to Mystic Falls at points in time when it was less likely people would recognize them.

Although they each stay in Mystic Falls due to a respective Petrova doppelganger, it later becomes about the continuous threats on them, their friends, and the town. Just as Katherine had changed their lives in Mystic Falls years before, she attempts to destroy the town in “I Was Feeling Epic.” However, she does not succeed. Stefan, Damon, and their friends band together to save Mystic Falls from destruction.

3 Klaus And Elijah: Getting Rebekah The Cure

Before he died, Klaus had done one last good thing for Rebekah. Rebekah had wanted to be human and have the chance to grow old and have children. Being a vampire prevented those dreams, and moving to New Orleans with The Cure lost had removed her chances of getting that wish.

However, Bonnie bringing The Cure home from the Prison World, had given Rebekah another chance at being human. In a few decades, when Damon would grow old, Rebekah could take The Cure that was running through his veins and have it for herself, getting the chance to have a human life.

2 Stefan And Damon: Healed Their Relationship

Stefan and Damon were rivals at the beginning of The Vampire Diaries. Throughout the series, Stefan and Damon went from competitors to allies and then took some strides to improve their relationship.

Their relationship as brothers and what they were willing to do for each other was the most visible part of the series, even in the midst of the love triangle. It may have taken a while, but in the end, Stefan and Damon looked at each other as brothers and as the most influential people in each other’s lives.

1 Klaus And Elijah: Died On Their Terms

With the amount of enemies, the Mikaelson’s had, it was short of a miracle that no one had permanently killed Klaus or Elijah. After over a thousand years, the time came for them to die.

While Klaus and Elijah would not have given up their lives if they weren’t tied to something that could hurt Hope, their choice to die remained in their hands, and they did it by their own decision. Klaus had explicitly asked for the Hollow to be transferred into him, knowing that the only way to be rid of it for good was to kill Klaus along with it.
