WandaVision Episode 3’s Credits Song Is A Big Clue To What’s Going On

Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision episode 3!

WandaVision episode 3 features a significant song in the credits that seemingly connects to Scarlet Witch’s situation. The installment keeps in line with Wanda Maximoff and Vision’s sitcom-esque lives in the suburban town of Westview. This time, however, the narrative takes place in the 1970s. While the episode initially presents a comedic tone, WandaVision episode 3 dives deeper into the outside forces involved in this strange reality. The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer” expands on that mystery by hinting at what’s truly going on in Wanda’s life.

Moments after Wanda realized she was pregnant in the closing moments of episode 2, her surroundings shifted to color as the story jumped to the next decade. With the ’70s aesthetic as a backdrop of episode 3, Wanda’s pregnancy rushes through the stages at an unbelievable rate. While Vision attempts to retrieve the local doctor, Geraldine is the only one left to help Wanda as she goes into labor. After Geraldine witnesses some of Wanda’s powers, the tension grows following the birth of the twins when Pietro’s death at the hands of Ultron is mentioned. Becoming concerned with Geraldine’s true identity, Wanda presumably banishes the woman, forcing her outside of a force field that surrounds Westview.

During the sequence in which Geraldine is thrown from Westview’s boundaries, a slew of S.W.O.R.D. agents converge. “Daydream Believer” from The Monkees also begins to play as the episode enters the end credits. The song, originally written by John Stewart, was released in October 1967. Within two months, the song from The Monkees hit No. 1 on the U.S. charts, and it still stands as one of the band’s classic hits. Interestingly enough, a remixed version of “Daydream Believer” was used for WandaVision‘s second trailer ahead of the show’s debut. Though the series takes precautions in protecting details regarding the plot, the particular song connects to Wanda’s fake reality.

How “Daydream Believer” Connects To Wanda’s Reality

“Daydream Believer” features an interesting chorus, which states: “Cheer up, sleepy Jean / Oh, what can it mean that / To a daydream believer /And a homecoming queen.” The song also mentions an alarm clock, a white knight, and the notion of money troubles. On a deeper level, the song centers on a relationship that once had hopes of great things, but the couple has since fallen distant due to materialism. The song also focuses on suburban life where expectations don’t always match reality. WandaVision, of course, presents a couple stuck in some sort of fake reality. Based on some of the reveals thus far, one could argue that Wanda is trapped in some kind of elaborate daydream. The question remains if she’s controlling the reality or an outside force is pulling the strings.

Seeing as Wanda forced Geraldine out of the Westview bubble, it indicates that she’s in control of the events, at least in some capacity. Vision’s conversation with Agnes and Herb seems to indicate that the town’s residents are all in on some big secret. Could it be that Wanda is the daydreamer and the others are responsible for making her believe in the fake reality? If so, the truth could be dangerous, which might explain why Westview is surrounded by a protective force field. The details regarding Wanda’s reality, including the reasoning behind it, will certainly come into focus as WandaVision continues.
