WandaVision’s Debra Jo Rupp Was Happy To Skip The 70s Episode

Debra Jo Rupp, who plays Mrs. Hart in Marvel’s WandaVision, says that she was happy to skip being in episode three, which is set in the ‘70s. While only three episodes have been released so far, the first entry of the MCU’s Phase 4 has taken over social media talk and already has detailed fan theories based on dissections of every single scene. WandaVision tells a sitcom-like story about two Avengers, Wanda / Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), as they live in a television-like world after the storyline of Avengers: Endgame.

The television show is quite different and distinct from every film and previous television installment in the Marvel Universe, which has caused controversy with fans who have waited since the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019. However, the show is taking a move from The Mandalorian’s handbook and releasing an episode every week, instead of a single drop of an entire season, which allows for more “water cooler” talk amongst people and is reminiscent of television shows before Netflix and other streaming services. This tactic seems to be working, building anticipation for what the next reveal will be and allowing for the weaving of theories.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to ComicBook, Debra Jo Rupp was actually excited to not have to be in the third episode of WandaVision. Even though Rupp is known for her role as the loving and eccentric mother Kitty Forman on the sitcom That ‘70s Show, she believed that the ‘50s and the ‘60s episodes suited her more. She stated:

“I happened to look good in ’50s clothing, unlike the ’70s, so that was awesome for me… That [’70s] clothing, there is nothing attractive about that clothing… I think if I had been a part of the ’70s episode, it would have taken you out of it. I think it was okay in the ’50s, but I think it would have… It’s a really good story and there’s lots of clues and that would have taken away from it. If I were directing, I would have done exactly the same thing.”

Rupp plays Mrs. Hart, the wife of Vision’s boss Mr. Hart (Fred Melamed). Rupp plays both the ‘50s and ‘60s decades exactly right, seeming like she could have actually been a television actor during those eras. Her character doesn’t appear in the third episode, which takes place in the ‘70s, and while her explanation about why she wouldn’t be a good fit isn’t as believable because of her experience on That ’70s Show, it may only be to serve the story better. Rupp has also stated that while she doesn’t know much about superheroes or if her character is even based on one or not, she received a call from director Matt Shakman because he needed someone very familiar with sitcoms and someone who could help the unfamiliar actors learn.

Rupp is an actor with incredible sitcom believability and a stage presence that overshadows most other actors, sometimes even Olsen and Bettany themselves. Her character, while only an older housewife, allows her to present herself as palatable and nice but in some moments, she can let that veil down a little and show audiences something dark, like when she constantly repeats “Stop it!” to her choking husband. Hopefully, the fans and viewers that are a little impatient with the series will give WandaVision a little more time to bloom and reveal what the story’s really about, even if the best thing to come from it is Rupp’s performance.
