What Alyson Hannigan Has Done Since Buffy The Vampire Slayer Ended

Actress Alyson Hannigan, who became well-known and beloved to fans of the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Willow Rosenberg, went on to have a successful career after the show ended in 2003.

Willow, one of Buffy’s best friends, started off as a shy, bookish young woman who spent a lot of time in the library and had a knack for computers. Over time, she came into her own, using her intelligence to help Buffy’s “Scooby gang” with research about the various vampires and demons Buffy came up against. As she developed a knack for magic, Willow showed an immense amount of aptitude and power from the start, saving Buffy’s life by returning Angel’s soul to him after he reverted back to the evil Angelus in season two. After Buffy died at the end of season five, Willow brought her back to life, for better or worse.

Willow’s struggles with magic came to a head and developed into addiction, which worsened after the death of her lover, Tara Maclay. This put her down a dark path of vengeance and Willow – who was previously known for her goodness and even innocence – ended up committing cold-blooded murder in her quest to avenge Tara. Though her relationship with magic was never the same, she ended up being integral in Buffy’s final fight against the First Evil in season seven, and her character continued on in the comics. Alyson Hannigan brought a lot of heart and strength to the character, and her formidable skills as an actress didn’t end with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Alyson Hannigan’s Career After Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Most notably, Hannigan ended up starring on the hit series How I Met Your Mother as one of the core five – Lily Aldrin – one of Ted’s best friends who married Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segal). Lily and Marshall are the most solid relationship of the bunch, and Lily’s character acts as a support beam for many of her friends in different ways throughout the series. She has the occasional rebellious streak, is known for her inability to keep secrets, and brought a warmth to the series that wouldn’t have been the same without Hannigan’s portrayal.

After Buffy ended, Hannigan also reprised her role as Michelle Flaherty from the American Pie movies two more times. American Wedding saw Michelle and Jim finally getting married in 2003, a culmination of what the franchise had been building toward. Then, American Reunion, which released in 2012 saw the franchise’s beloved characters settling into their 30s. Hannigan delighted horror fans in indie horror movie You Might Be The Killer alongside another Joss Whedon alum, Fran Kranz, who starred in Dollhouse and The Cabin in the Woods.

From there, Hannigan took on the role of Dr. Ann Possible in the live-action TV movie based on the popular cartoon series, Kim Possible. Most recently, she can be seen hosting the Girl Scout Cookie Championship on the Food Network. Beyond her acting career, she married fellow Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Alexis Denisof, who played Wesley Wyndam-Pryce on both Buffy and its spin-off series, Angel, in 2003.
