A sequel to the hit movie I Am Legend has been confirmed, and if there ends up being an I Am Legend 2 video game starring the lead actor Will Smith, there are a few things it needs to do. While tie-in games developed a bit of a notorious reputation when the original film was released, more recent licensed games have shown that good movie games are achievable. It’s unknown at the moment whether an I Am Legend 2 game will ever happen, but if it does, it needs to tread carefully in order to be the best game that it can be.
In I Am Legend, society has ended. A genetically modified strain of measles has turned much of humanity into cannibalistic creatures known as Darkseekers. U.S. Army virologist Robert Neville walks the streets of Manhattan, desperately trying to formulate a cure. There isn’t much that’s known about I Am Legend 2 just yet, but Will Smith, who played Neville, is confirmed to return, with Michael B. Jordan also attached to the project. At the end of the original movie, Neville sacrifices himself to destroy Darkseekers who have invaded his home and manages to save two survivors along with his cure.
If I Am Legend 2 enjoys the success of the first movie, then a video game adaptation may follow. If so, then there are a few things it needs in order to be a great game and buck the trend of lackluster adaptations. In addition to Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan, characters from the original I Am Legend could also appear. How Will Smith returns in I Am Legend 2 is as of yet unknown, but there are a couple of possible ways. The movie isn’t even out yet, so it might be a bit soon to be making predictions, but hopefully, it’s as good as the original.
An I Am Legend 2 Video Game Needs Will Smith & Michael B. Jordan
If an I Am Legend 2 video game were to happen, then one of the things it would need is Michael B. Jordan’s character, along with Anna and Ethan if they’re in the movie. The main cast is possibly a given if a game were to be made, but it’s still something that could do a potential project a lot of good. All of it would depend on how exactly the movie unfolds, especially if it ends with another death as the original did. It’s even possible for I Am Legend 2 to change the meaning of the original’s name. Jordan and the rest of the main cast could do a lot for the game depending on what form the movie takes.
Another thing that any I Am Legend 2 game – and indeed the movie itself – needs is to avoid killing off another dog. Sam, Robert Neville’s canine companion, lost her life after being attacked by infected dogs in the 2007 film. It’s one of the most tragic moments in the movie for dog lovers, in no small part due to the fact that Neville is forced to kill her himself after his cure fails. Many a tear was shed at that scene, and although it adds to the story, I Am Legend 2 needs to keep any dogs in it alive.
Possibly the most important thing that a video game adaptation would need is the original movie’s alternate ending. I Am Legend 2‘s cloning theory is another viable way for Will Smith to rejoin, but the alternate ending where Robert Neville lives and realizes that he is a monster in the eyes of the Darkseekers is much more faithful to the book that the film was based on. I Am Legend 2 already has a built-in reason for Will Smith to return if it followed the alternate ending, so it should avoid convoluted plots like cloning.
