What Nick Fury’s Been Doing Since Avengers: Age of Ultron

Warning: SPOILERS for Captain Marvel Prelude

The official Captain Marvel Prelude comic has finally revealed exactly what Nick Fury and Maria Hill have been doing since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Samuel L. Jackson’s former head of S.H.I.E.L.D. vanished from the MCU after the disastrous battle of Sokovia, only returning unexpectedly in the final post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War.

Brief though it was, that post-credits scene raised a lot of curious questions. Fury and Hill were seen working together, and they clearly had access to considerable resources – but where did those resources come from? How exactly did they have access to orbital satellites that were still monitoring S.H.I.E.L.D. hotspots like Wakanda? And why hadn’t the two intervened in the superhero civil war years earlier? Those questions have been answered at last in the official Captain Marvel Prelude comic, which reveals Fury and Hill have been working together since the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Hill became part of the Avengers’ support staff, based out of their upstate New York compound, and helped Fury by keeping an eye on the team. When the Avengers splintered over the passing of the controversial Sokovia Accords, Nick decided it was time for both of them to drop out of the spotlight altogether. They vanished, and became a crack team dealing with situations that weren’t on the Avengers radar. One piece of dialogue in the comic even suggests their focus was on quietly disposing of Chitauri weaponry that was being obtained by terrorist groups. But Fury believed that a greater threat was coming…

To this end, Fury tracked down Steve Rogers ahead of Infinity War and attempted to persuade him to reconcile with Tony Stark. When that attempt failed, he sent Hill in to talk to Stark. She was dismissed from the Avengers Compound for her efforts. The Avengers experiment, Fury reluctantly had to admit to himself, had truly fallen apart.

Nick Fury appears to have secreted away a wealth of S.H.I.E.L.D. resources in case he ever needed to go on the run, so presumably was using this cache to maintain his efforts while undercover. Meanwhile, it would hardly be a surprise if Hill quietly shuffled some Avengers funding from Stark away to Nick as well, at least while she was still working for Tony. The two were also liaising with Klein, a S.H.I.E.L.D. loyalist Fury trusted, who had gotten a job running a company called “Transpo.” There’s no comic book precedent for this company, but apparently Fury considered it perfect for covering their tracks. It may be Klein had provided Fury with the satellite uplinks he was using to monitor former S.H.I.E.L.D. hotspots.

Although both Fury and Hill were killed in the universe-halving ‘snap,’ they’re certain to return. After all, the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War killed heroes confirmed to return in sequels. What’s more, these two characters are set to play a major role in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Is it possible S.H.I.E.L.D. will reform under Fury’s command in the aftermath of Avengers 4?
