Disney has announced Sister Act 3, leaving fans of the franchise wondering: when will it release and what will it be about? The original films, Sister Act and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, were released in 1992 and 1993, respectively. The Sister Act franchise stars Whoopi Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, a street-smart Nevada singer who witnesses a mafia-style murder. Produced for $31 million, Sister Act crushed at the box office with a $231 million take. Goldberg reprised her role for the sequel, which prominently features a teenage actress named Lauryn Hill, who later became the Fugees’ lead singer and ultimately released the eclectic and highly-acclaimed studio album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. Despite the talent involved, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit received less than stellar reviews and failed to match the original film’s cultural impact.
Since 2007, Goldberg has been a co-host for ABC’s The View and has quietly maintained a TV career with numerous voice acting roles. In feature films, Goldberg has similarly managed to sustain high-profile gigs, with her most recent movies being Furlough (co-starring Tessa Thompson) and Nobody’s Fool (co-starring Tiffany Haddish).
Sister Act 3 Is Happening On Disney+
In December 2018, Disney announced that Sister Act 3 would be released on Disney Plus. By the time the streaming service launched in November 2019, the Sister Act buzz had increased. Regina Hicks and Karin Gist were hired to write the script. Hicks began her career as a supervising producer for Sister, Sister, and most recently produced Insecure. As for Gist, she has produced episodes of Revenge, Grey’s Anatomy, Star, and the new series Mixed-ish. The duo previously collaborated to write the Disney Channel original moves Camp Rock and the sequel Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.
Sister Act 3 Release Date Info
While Disney Plus has announced its official launch lineup and upcoming programming, Sister Act 3 is currently still in development. That doesn’t mean the film won’t release in 2020, but the lack of casting news implies that Sister Act 3 probably won’t premiere until 2021.
Sister Act 3 Story Details
Sister Act 3 will reportedly feature an all-new cast, and Goldberg has stated that she most likely won’t reprise her role (via Digital Spy). However, Goldberg has suggested that she’d like to possibly direct, which would add a nostalgic element for fans of the original two films.
If Sister Act 3 won’t revolve around Sister Mary Clarence, it’s entirely possible that Hicks and Gist will focus on a brand new protagonist, perhaps one that’s somehow directly connected to Goldberg’s character. So, we’ll have to see if Sister Act 3 will indeed be a narrative continuation, or if it will be a traditional reboot and become known simply as “Sister Act”: an updated version for a new generation.
