Where To Watch Violet Evergarden Online (Netflix, Hulu, Prime)

It’s been hailed as one of the best anime series released in recent years, and here’s where to watch Violet Evergarden online including whether it’s available to stream with Netflix, Hulu and Prime. Violet Evergarden started life as a light novel series penned by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. The series was published by anime studio Kyoto Animation’s publishing arm KA Esuma Bunko from 2015 until it came to an end in 2020 after four volumes.

Set in a society similar to post-World War I Europe, Violet Evergarden follows its titular protagonist – a former child soldier who starts working as an Auto Memory Doll after the war ends and her superior/caretaker dies in battle. Put simply, Auto Memory Dolls are ghostwriters tasked with penning personal and emotional letters for people who are experiencing difficulty expressing their feelings. Through her new job, Violet learns how to reintegrate back into society after returning from the battlefield and regains her humanity in the process of helping other people.

Kyoto Animation also helmed an anime adaptation of Kana Akatsuki and Akiko Takase’s light novel series. The 13-episode Violet Evergarden anime series premiered worldwide on Netflix in 2018 to critical acclaim. Viewers praised its strong female protagonist, emotional story and stunningly animated scenes, and the series went on to win Best Animation at the 2019 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Kyoto Animation still has plenty of the light novel series left to adapt so anime fans are hopeful that a second season will happen soon, but in the meantime here’s where to watch Violet Evergarden season 1.

Unfortunately, Violet Evergarden isn’t available to watch with Hulu or Prime but Netflix subscribers are in luck. Netflix secured streaming rights for the series back before its international premiere and currently has all 13 episodes of Violet Evergarden season 1 in its library. Anime fans with a Netflix subscription can also watch a Violet Evergarden anime OVA episode produced by Kyoto Animation that focuses on a completely original plotline not featured in the light novel series.

It could be some time before another season of Violet Evergarden arrives, but luckily Kyoto Animation also made a couple of films that should keep fans entertained in the meantime. The first – Violet Evergarden: Eternity And The Auto Memory Doll – was released in 2019, while the second is titled Violet Evergarden: The Movie and was released in 2020. Both Violet Evergarden films are available to watch with Netflix too.
