Who Voices Handsome Jack In The Borderlands Franchise?

Handsome Jack is the most popular villain from the Borderlands franchise, but who is the actor behind the voice? The Borderlands franchise arrived in 2009 and set itself apart from other first-person shooters with its colorful humor and likable heroes and villains. Gearbox Software (Aliens: Colonial Marines) developed the game, which proved to be such a hit it didn’t take long for Borderlands 2 to arrive, which improved on the original in just about every way and is (arguably) the most popular entry.

Borderlands is now a full-blown franchise, with Borderlands 3 arriving in 2019 and being greeted with mostly warm reviews. It’s also received spinoffs in the form of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – which reveals the origin story of Handsome Villain – and Tales From The Borderlands. The latter title broke from formula by being a point and click adventure and was acclaimed for its fantastic writing and performances. The world of Borderlands is set to get even bigger, as Eli Roth (The House With A Clock With In Its Walls) is developing a movie adaptation.

Borderlands’ most popular bad guy is Handsome Jack, who was a central character in three games. Jack was introduced in Borderlands 2 and is the CEO of the Hyperion Corporation. He grows from an egotistical irritant to full-blown villain by the game’s finale, but what makes him a unique antagonist is his unwavering belief that he’s the hero of the story and his evil deeds are justified. Jack wears a mask over his face to cover a scar, the origins of which were explained in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. He also appeared in hologram form in Tales From The Borderlands. Handsome Jack is voiced by actor Dameon Clarke, who has a prolific CV.

Dameon Clarke should be well known to fans of the Dragon Ball franchise, having voiced characters like Cell and Paragus and many others across countless series and video games. His voice work can also be heard in games like Bloodrayne and Days Gone, and anime shows Blue Gender and Ergo Proxy. In live-action, he’s had guest roles on the likes of Supernatural, 24 and How To Get Away With Murder.

One of the reasons Handsome Jack is so acclaimed is Dameon Clarke’s excellent performance, infusing what should be a hateful villain with both humor and humanity. Clarke has been nominated for his work on the Borderlands series multiple times, including winning Best Performance by a Human Male at 2012 Spike Awards. Given Handsome Jack’s ultimate fate in Borderlands 2 it’s unlikely he was will serve as a primary villain in future games, though his presence was still felt in Borderlands 3.
