Why Jensen Ackles Didn’t Tell Jared Padalecki About Supernatural Prequel

Jensen Ackles details exactly why he did not inform Jared Padalecki about the development of the Supernatural prequel series. Supernatural focuses on the adventures of two brothers, Sam (Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Ackles), as they travel across the United States hunting demons, monsters, and even angels. The series ran for an impressive 15-season run and was one of the flagship series for The CW, where the series aired its final episode on November 19, 2020.

Less than a year after the series aired its final episode The CW announced it was developing a prequel series to Supernatural focusing on Sam and Dean’s parents titled Winchester with Ackles reprising his role as Dean in a narrator role and as an executive producer. The news caught many by surprise, including Padalecki, who first heard about the series development on Twitter and voiced his displeasure, although he later clarified his reaction. Supernatural creator Erik Kripke apologized to Padalecki about the prequel confusion and Ackles and Padalecki worked the issue out, with Ackles now set to direct an episode of Padalecki’s new series, Walker.

Ackles talked candidly about the whole experience on the latest episode of the podcast Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. Ackles explained that the reason he didn’t mention anything to Padalecki is because he didn’t mention anything to anyone since the series was still in the early stages of development and didn’t want to jinx the project. The star was just taken aback by how quickly the trades found out and had to make a quick statement while on the set of The Boys, and didn’t have time to tell everyone before the news hit. While he wished things between him and Padalecki could have remained private, the two made up. Ackles said:

“[I’m] extremely superstitious when it comes to a few things. And one of those is — and this is probably something that a lot of actors share — we don’t talk about auditions until we got the role. [It’s] an unwritten rule that you just don’t talk about sh—t until it’s a done deal […] And [The Winchesters] was my first venture into producing and creating content, and I didn’t wanna jinx it at any cost, so I shut up about it. Only the people that had to know knew…I definitely had people that I was excited to tell. Jared being number one on that list… [After the news broke] I had a long text from Jared, and he was really bummed, and I just remember my heart just sank. In hindsight, that could have been a step that was avoided. But he did it, and it happened, and we dealt with it. And he and I, we’re great. I wish he had just called me and said, ‘Yo, dude, why didn’t you tell me you’re doing this?’ And I would have been like, ‘Oh, okay, yes, I’ve been working and this has bene happening and it’s way early in the process. It’s not even a done deal, we don’t even have an outline. I just didn’t wanna talk about it or tell people and jinx it. And he totally got it. He understood, and he was like ‘Ah, I probably shouldn’t have done that.'”

On the same podcast, Ackles said he is currently working with Warner Bros. on a secret DC Comics project, but didn’t share any more details as he didn’t want to jinx. Ackles has plenty of reason to be hesitant as this is not the first Supernatural spin-off series to be developed. During the series run two different spin-offs were developed, Supernatural: Bloodlines and Wayward Sister, but neither of the series got picked up, with only backdoor pilots developed for both, so the odds have been stacked against Supernatural spin-off series.

With the possible sale of The CW up in the air, Winchester‘s odd are up in the air as it could suffer a similar fate to the planned Aquaman series that was not picked up due to the change in management from The WB to The CW. However, the return of the Supernatural franchise to The CW could be too good of an opportunity for a new buyer to pass up, as the demand for the series is still present with the recent announcement of Supernatural rewatch podcast. The network could pair Winchester on the same night as Padalecki’s Walker, making for a Supernatural reunion block of programming.
