One of the best shots found in the trailer for Mortal Kombat 2021 is of Kano using his laser beam eye, but it looks to be on the wrong side. Kano’s legacy in the Mortal Kombat franchise stretches all the way back to the original video game, in which he was clad in a rather generic looking white costume. His fatality was perhaps the most memorable in the game though, as it featured the ruthless criminal ripping out the heart of his opponent.
Kano wasn’t a playable character in Mortal Kombat 2, but Mortal Kombat 3 saw him get a noticeable makeover. The small layer of hair he had was shaved off to create a completely bald look, his white outfit became red and black, and the bionic eye and metal plate covering it were spruced up to look sleeker as well. Most notably, Kano’s red eye now fired laser beams hot enough to kill an opponent, becoming one of his new fatalities.
1995’s Mortal Kombat movie, thanks to a choice made by late actor Trevor Goddard, led Kano to become canonically Australian, a change that has only added to the villainous fighter’s charm and popularity. He features prominently in the gory trailer for Mortal Kombat‘s 2021 reboot, but oddly, his laser beam eye is seen firing from the wrong side of his face. Thankfully, there’s a readily apparent explanation for that, and fans needn’t worry about a major error having been made.
Why Kano Uses The Wrong Laser Beam Eye In Mortal Kombat Trailer
It was confirmed back when the first photos of Mortal Kombat 2021 were released that Kano doesn’t have his usual eye plate covering one side of his face anymore. Instead, judging by his facial scarring, the plate is actually grafted on under his skin. Considering that, it’s not hard to understand why fans might see Kano’s laser beam shooting out of his left eye instead of the right in the trailer and think that the filmmakers have made another cosmetic change, since it was the first actual footage released of Kano in action in the reboot. However, later in the trailer, Kano is shown performing his heart-ripping fatality, with his bionic eye and scarring correctly placed on the right side of his face.
Since that’s true of still Kano photos as well, that only leaves one logical explanation: the shot of his laser eye beam firing in the trailer is flipped for some reason, such as when the “flip horizontal” setting is applied to an image in PhotoShop. This isn’t that uncommon of a practice, as for whatever reason, sometimes those assembling a trailer feel like something looks better from a different angle or direction. In this case though, the placement of Kano’s laser eye in Mortal Kombat is so recognizable and long-standing that fans couldn’t help but notice the error.
