Why Lucifer Season 6 Ended With My Chemical Romance Song

Luciferco-showrunner Ildy Modrovich explains why the show’s season 6 finale ended with a surprise My Chemical Romance song. The urban fantasy series starring Tom Ellis as the Lord of Hell is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Lucifer ran from 2016 to 2021, initially airing on Fox before Netflix picked up the series for the final 3 seasons.

In the final moments of Lucifer season 6, episode 10, “Partners ‘Til the End”, Lucifer Morningstar (Ellis) said farewell to his love Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and time-displaced future daughter Rory (Brianna Hildebrand), returning to Hell to preserve the timeline. However, Lucifer returns to his realm with renewed purpose, redeeming lost souls and helping them ascend to Heaven rather than torturing and punishing them. WhileLucifer didn’t have a traditional happy ending, the series finale did leave things on a heartwarming note for Lucifer and Chloe, as the couple reunited in the Lord of Hell’s reformed domain to the sound of My Chemical Romance’s 2006 hit “Welcome to the Black Parade”. Now long after the episode’s release, the showrunners have explained their reasoning for choosing to end the series with that song.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant timed with Lucifer season 6’s home media release, Modrovich states that the decision to use My Chemical Romance’s song was inspired by a shared interest with her child. A personal passion for the song led Modrovich to realize it’s the perfect track for Lucifer’s journey. She says:

[That was] all my kid. So, my offspring enjoys — well, that was really the first obsession, musical obsession. I wasn’t that familiar with My Chem, because it was sort of in between my — and Clover, by the way, my kid has no ties to that time, did not grow up in the 2000s, but man, it became a thing, we listened to every single song, I read all the Gerard Way comic books. I was equally obsessed, we’re going to the concert, by the way, that’s been postponed like two years running, excited about that. So anyway, the minute I heard that song, I was like, “That’s Lucifer’s song.” I always wanted to squish it into this show somewhere, and when we got it for the end, I was so excited.

Modrovich’s previously defended Lucifer season 6’s ending, sharing her insight into the character and offering audiences a chance to look at the character’s journey from her perspective. The showrunner explained that Lucifer’s journey saw him grow from a spiteful and selfish man to a parent who recognized Rory’s struggle through his own experience, changing his ways not just for his family’s sake, but in a way where he can continue to help others. Modrovich’s explanation adds a new layer to Lucifer‘s final moments when the lyrics to “Welcome to the Black Parade” are considered, as the song begins with a father asking his son if he will become a figure who can help the beaten and the damned when he’s grown up.

While potential Lucifer spinoff shows could be explored if an opportunity arises, the series’ final moments give Lucifer and Chloe a memorable, heartwarming conclusion that remains with longtime fans of the series. As such, the inclusion of “Welcome to the Black Parade” helped enhance the moment, with the song’s gradual rhythm helping to build anticipation until Lucifer and Chloe’s reunion. With Modrovich revealing that the idea to include the song came from a shared interest with her child and a place of passion for the character, a new emotional layer has been added to the conclusion of the much-beloved Lucifer.
