Why Mom and Dad Needs A Sequel (Nicolas Cage Has A Pitch)

Brian Taylor’s 2018 horror comedy Mom and Dad follows the events of mass hysteria as it takes over the minds of parents and drives them to murder their children. The film has received positive reviews from critics by offering a gory comedy with an over-the-top performance by its cast. Nicolas Cage, in particular, has pitched his own idea for a sequel to the film.

The film follows Brent Ryan (Nicolas Cage) and his family of four: Kendall (Selma Blair), Carly (Anne Winters), and Josh (Zackary Arthur). Immediately, the film introduces a tense environment between them which only escalates as the story progresses. As parents fall victim to a mass hysteria that causes them to kill their children, Carly and Josh fend for themselves against their mom and dad.

After an all-out battle throughout their house, Carly and Josh ultimately overpower their killer parents with the help of Riley. By the end of the film, Brent and Kendall are tied up in the basement, but before the audience finds out what is about to happen to them, it ends. Mom and Dad ends on a cliffhanger and an unresolved case of mass hysteria that lacks any sort of larger explanation.

Why Mom and Dad Needs A Sequel

The only way to get answers to these questions is to produce a sequel to the film. Even Nicolas Cage believes Mom and Dad deserves a second film, and that it left the family in the ideal situation to justify getting one. He has even proposed that the follow-up could feature the kids turning on the parents in a similar hysteria.

Mom and Dad is unlike any other family-centered horror film before it. It highlights the dysfunction that pre-existed in the Ryan household and ups the ante through giving parents, who are usually protectors of their children in horror movies, an inexplicable drive to kill. The prospect of a sequel that would show kids fighting back against the hysteria or even getting it themselves would make for a rowdy and enormously entertaining film. If Brian Taylor would allow it, seeing what happens next to the Ryans and if the situation can simply disappear, or if it has completely overtaken them could amplify the horror factor.

The film undoubtedly deserves a sequel. With the uniqueness and creativity behind Mom and Dad, a follow-up would only help to solidify the film as an integral piece of horror history because of how it defies movie tropes and changes the genre. As of right now, there is no word on whether or not a sequel will be made, but with Nicolas Cage and fans supporting it, the prospect is not off of the table just yet.
