Why Quicksilver’s Memory Of Sokovia Is Different

Evan Peters’ Quicksilver claims that he is Scarlet Witch’s dead brother in WandaVision, but their recollection of their childhoods in Sokovia are significantly different. Marvel Studios’ Disney+ show pulled off its biggest surprise thus far with the debut of Pietro Maximoff in episode 5, “On A Very Special Episode…,” as part of Wanda’s ideal reality in Westview. But instead of the MCU’s version of the character played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, it was Peters’ Quicksilver, who played the same superhero speedster in the separate Fox X-Men franchise.

At this point, it’s unclear how this iteration of Pietro made it into Westview. Wanda claimed that this wasn’t her doing when Vision became suspicious when the doorbell rang, and WandaVision episode 6, “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!” backed this idea when she asked him a string of questions not just to understand how this came to be, but also to possibly know whether or not he’s an ally. For the most part, this version of Pietro was able to either work around the queries or properly answer them. However, there’s a point in the outing where he shared a childhood memory; it was one of their supposed Halloween in Sokovia where they suffered Typhus but his sister was quick to point out that it’s not exactly how she remembers it. Instead of correcting himself, he merely gaslit Wanda and chalked up her muddy memory to suppressed trauma.

This is a big indication that Peters’ Quicksilver is not Wanda’s dead brother. As confirmed in WandaVision episode 5, Scarlet Witch is unable to resurrect the dead despite her growing powers, so it’s impossible that she was somehow able to bring him back, just in a different body. This particular encounter tipped off Wanda and so she started asking varying questions subsequently. While he’s able to correctly recall how the MCU’s Quicksilver died in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he’s been evasive when asked about the specifics of how he got to Westview. He claimed that his memory is still muddled which effectively dissuades Scarlet Witch from asking any more questions. But between his weird antics including making an insensitive remark about Vision’s death and his contradicting stories, it’s getting increasingly clear that he’s neither Fox nor MCU’s Quicksilver; instead, he could be an unknown force that has his own personal motivations for coming to infiltrating Wanda’s pocket reality.

It’s worth noting that even the accompanying visuals for Peters’ Quicksilver story didn’t really make sense; in it, Pietro and Wanda are seemingly dressed like Nick Fury and Black Widow. Considering their assumed age during this memory, they may have been around 9-10, so sometime around 1999 — a point in the MCU timeline where neither of the SHIELD operatives was known. Even up until this point, Fury and Natasha Romanoff’s real identities are still concealed unlike other MCU heroes such as Iron Man and Captain America. It’s unclear how Pietro came up with this narrative in WandaVision, but it further lends credence to the assumption that he is not who he claims himself to be, as if he only has general information about the MCU’s Quicksilver but not the intimate details that would prove that he’s indeed Wanda’s brother who just somehow returned in a different body.

Currently, it’s safe to assume that there’s more to Peters’ Pietro than meets the eye. The popular theory claims that Quicksilver could be Mephisto in disguise; the Marvel devil has long been rumored to be involved in whatever is happening in Westview. There is also speculation that he has his hand on Loki. Whatever the case may be, WandaVision needs to reveal the real identity of this version of Pietro and it’s possible that this could be sooner rather than later considering how Scarlet Witch didn’t even think twice about blasting him off in the latest episode.
