Why The Mandalorian Has A Mustache Under His Helmet

As part of his belief, Din Djarin almost never removes his helmet, so why is he sporting a mustache in The Mandalorian? There have only been a couple of times where Mando showed his face in the two seasons so far, and in both instances, it was out of necessity. Interestingly, however, for someone who doesn’t show his face to anyone else, Din opts to have high-maintenance facial hair.

In The Mandalorian season 2, episode 7, “The Believer”, Din was forced to take off his helmet in order to get the location for Moff Gideon’s ship, as part of his efforts to rescue Baby Yoda. This was only the second time that the character showed his face in the show; the first instance was in season 1 when IG-11 insisted that he take his helmet off so he can properly tend to his injuries following a heated encounter with stormtroopers on Nevarro. Things were different this time, however. Aside from Din willingly breaking his code as a Mandalorian, there were also people who saw his face, including Valin Hess (Richard Brake) and foe-turned-ally, Mayfeld (Bill Burr).

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

While it’s always a welcome development to see Pedro Pascal’s face in The Mandalorian, since it’s such a rare occurrence, this brought up a pressing question: Why does he even have a mustache when he wears a helmet most of the time? When Mando removed his helmet in season 1, this wasn’t much of an issue as the conversation was more geared towards seeing his face in the show for the first time. His mustache at that point also wasn’t as prominent. Now, however, viewers were able to focus on what’s happening on the screen. Din was without his helmet far longer in The Mandalorian season 2, giving the public a better look at Pascal’s face. There a couple of possible explanations for this, including the time period.

As illustrated in The Mandalorian, mustaches tend to be fashionable during this Star Wars era. Almost every single male player in the show has this particular facial hair, like Greef Karga and Moff Gideon. Given this, it’s possible that Din would want to follow the trend himself even if, technically, he’s the only one who can see it. Perhaps, he likes the look of a mustache in general and wants one for himself. Just because no one else sees his face doesn’t mean that he’s no longer interested in maintaining a grooming regimen. After all, he still has to stare at himself daily when he takes off his face covering.

As his answer to Omera suggests when asked when the last time he took his helmet off back in The Mandalorian season 1, he seems to regularly remove it when he’s alone. Otherwise, it’s also possible that he’s one of those guys who can easily grow a mustache, which means that it might not be too much work to maintain. Assuming that this is the case, it’s more practical for him to trim it rather than shaving it completely as doing so would increase his risk of getting ingrown hairs since he’s mostly with his helmet on.

Outside of The Mandalorian‘s world, Din wearing a mustache just makes sense considering that Pascal is known for it. In most of his projects, he sports varying facial hair styles, although he notably doesn’t have any in Wonder Woman 1984 where he plays villain Maxwell Lord. Whatever the case may be, Mando actually looks good with the mustache; it actually even makes him look cooler.
