Why True Story Season 2 Shouldn’t Happen

Kevin Hart’s True Story mini series is streaming now on Netflix—but should it be renewed for season 2? Directed by Stephen Williams and Hanelle Culpepper, True Story follows the homecoming of internationally successful comedian and actor Kid (Kevin Hart). When Kid discovers a dead woman beside him after a night out on the town with his brother Carlton (Wesley Snipes), he makes a series of reckless decisions to cover up the crime and save his prospering career.

Despite the title literally suggesting that the show is based on real events, True Story is a largely fictionalized piece of work. Regardless, the line between Kevin Hart and Kid, the character he portrays, is somewhat blurry. In an interview with the New York Times, True Story creator Eric Newman stated how Hart wanted to play a character who is immensely similar to himself, only made more desperate by an existential threat—the possibility of losing his career.

Although True Story has a promising premise, it has garnered mixed reviews from critics. The show has received praise for the performances of Hart and his on-screen brother, Wesley Snipes. On the other hand, the series’ plot becomes arguably predictable and flat at times, especially with the constant embittered comments about fame and stardom that not even the actors’ chemistry can save. Kevin Hart’s undeniable popularity as a comedian may result in True Story season 2 being green-lit regardless of critical response—but should it happen?

Is True Story Season 2 Renewed?

Netflix has not yet renewed True Story for season 2 at this time. This is primarily because it has been designed and advertised as a limited series. Also, the show ended clearly, with most of its loose ends already tied up. Needless to say, there is still a chance that True Story will be renewed for season 2, like what happened with Big Little Lies season 2; another show originally billed as a miniseries, yet it was eventually renewed for another season after gaining critical acclaim.

Could True Story Season 2 Work? What The Story Could Be

The finale of True Story sees Kid use his money and influence to straighten out his messes and resume his career. In the process, most of the main characters have met unfortunate endings, so True Story season 2 would most likely require a new story and a new set of characters to focus on. The new season could focus on how, in spite of Kid having a clean slate, his secrets can still be unearthed. Perhaps the police could conduct a thorough investigation about what really happened, or Kid could be targeted by the remaining members of the mob—formerly led by Savvas (Chris Diamantopoulos).

Why True Story Season 2 Shouldn’t Happen

As mentioned earlier, Kevin Hart’s True Story is constructed as a limited series, so by default its story is already complete. A season 2 renewal risks dragging out the story and losing its audience, and with most of Kid’s inner circle removed, it would be difficult to flesh out interesting arcs within the show. A new plot focusing on Kid’s secrets potentially being exposed also runs the risk of retreading on already familiar ground. Ultimately, it would then be better for the integrity of the series to just stick with the stand-alone format of True Story and forego season 2 entirely.
