Will Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword Joy-Cons Drift Too?

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is being remastered for the Nintendo Switch, and it’s launching alongside a set of limited edition Joy-Cons. The Joy-Cons look amazing, but fans should be wary, as the threat of controller drift still weighs heavy on the Joy-Cons.

Skyward Sword HD is coming to the Switch in July. The original version of the game on the Nintendo Wii required the Wii MotionPlus accessory in order to function. This allowed the player to swing the Master Sword in a number of different ways, allowing for the most interactive combat system in a Legend of Zelda game to date. The MotionPlus was also used to control other gadgets in the game. The Nintendo Switch isn’t compatible with Wiimotes, but the control scheme of Skyward Sword HD has been reworked. The player can use dual Joy-Cons, or map the movements of Link’s sword to the right joystick. The joystick method is required for playing on the Switch Lite.

Nintendo is releasing a set of Skyward Sword HD Joy-Cons alongside the game. The left one is light blue and features the Hylian crest, while the right one is a darker shade of blue and features the symbol of the Triforce. They come with a set of light grey Joy-Con straps. Nintendo has yet to reveal the price for the Joy-Cons, but fans are expecting them to cost the same as the regular sets.

Do Skyward Sword Joy-Cons Fix Nintendo’s Drift?

Nintendo is presenting the Skyward Sword HD Joy-Cons in the same way as the others, except with a different coat of paint. There is no indication that these Joy-Cons are different from the existing ones, which means that they are likely as susceptible as Joy-Con drift as all of the others on the market. Joy-Con drift is the name given to the issue where the joystick acts as if it’s being pushed when it isn’t. Nintendo has claimed that Joy-Con drift isn’t an issue, even though people all over social media have complained about their controllers becoming unusable over time.

It’s possible that Nintendo will release an upgraded version of the Switch Joy-Cons in the future, as it’s currently being investigated by the EU over the issue. Nintendo could be saving the improved drift-free Joy-Cons for the rumored Switch Pro. As it stands, there is no reason to think that the Skyward Sword HD Joy-Cons are any more resistant to drifting than the other Joy-Cons on the market. Doug Bowser has promised that Joy-Cons will be improved in the future, but there is still no indication that this has happened, and buyers should beware before pre-ordering the Skyward Sword HD controllers. Fans complained about the breakable weapons in Breath of the Wild, and they would be even more livid if the same was true of the controllers as well.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and the Skyward Sword Joy-Cons will be released on July 16.
