William Shatner Remembers Star Trek Co-Star Leonard Nimoy With Sweet Photo

William Shatner pays tribute to his late Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy on the 7th anniversary of his passing. The Star Trek franchise has come a long way since it began in 1966, with three live-action shows set to air this year and a fourth movie starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto now in development. And that’s just scratching the surface. At the same time, Star Trek fans know all this wouldn’t be possible without the very people who helped bring it to life decades ago. Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek, but it was those like Shatner and Nimoy who were its faces for so long.

In playing the half-human half-Vulcan Spock, Nimoy touched a generation of fans who were looking for someone to represent them. Nimoy played Spock throughout all three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series before going on to appear in several films set within the franchise as well. He even directed two of the movies: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Before his passing in 2015, Nimoy’s final onscreen appearance came in the 2013 Kelvin timeline movie Star Trek Into Darkness; its sequel, Star Trek Beyond, was dedicated in part to him.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

February 27 is the anniversary of Nimoy’s death, and the day hasn’t gone by unrecognized. Shatner, who played the Kirk to Nimoy’s Spock, honored his late co-star in a sweet social media post. He shared a picture of himself and Nimoy from years ago and kept his caption short, sweet, and punctuated with a heart: “Leonard. 3/26/31 -2/27/15.” You can see the simple, but heartfelt tribute down below.

Nimoy achieved much in his career beyond Star Trek, but it’s his time as Spock that truly cemented him as a cultural icon. In fact, the character Spock is still thriving today. In the upcoming Star Trek 4, Quinto is expected to once again play the Starfleet officer, while Ethan Peck will step into the role for Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Though their Spocks have carried out vastly different stories than Nimoy’s did, there’s no doubt that their performances carry shades of what Nimoy brought to the character.

In case one needed more proof that Nimoy’s legacy is still strong, his hometown dedicated a special day to the Star Trek actor just last year. March 26 is known as Leonard Nimoy Day in Boston, allowing his fans, friends, and family to honor him year after year. Today is a sadder day to remember Nimoy, but it’s still gratifying to see he is far from forgotten. Live long and prosper indeed.
