Wolverine Art Imagines The Boys’ Antony Starr as a Mutant in the MCU

A new piece of artwork argues that The Boys’ Antony Starr is the right choice to play Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since news broke in late 2017 that Disney was in talks to acquire Fox’s many television and film assets, fans have been waiting for the announcement that the X-Men would finally join the MCU.

Part of the anticipation relates to finding out who will be chosen to play iconic comic book creations, such as Professor X, Cyclops, and Magneto. However, considering his standing in pop culture, Wolverine has arguably drawn the most focus. Notable actors, from Jason Momoa to Taron Egerton, have chimed in to express their interest in taking over the role from Hugh Jackman. Other names have been advocated for through fan art, such as Jon Bernthal and Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery. Now, another contender has entered into the equation.

New art by spdrmnkyxxiii makes the compelling case that Starr would be a great Wolverine, whenever the character makes his MCU debut. In the image, Starr is sporting Wolverine’s familiar sideburns and beard. Interestingly, Wolverine’s attire seems to be inspired by the Astonishing X-Men comic series which was released in 2004. The look proved popular, as fans appreciated how the costume gave an update to the mutant’s classic look. Check out the art below:

The argument that the artist puts forth is that Starr would be a good Wolverine, not because of his performance as the destructively narcissistic Homelander in The Boys, but because of his time starring in Banshee. In the series, which was recently added to HBO Max, Starr portrayed the protagonist Lucas Hood. A former thief who spent years in prison, Lucas possessed knowledge of weapons and proved to be a very capable marksman. But it’s Lucas’ personality that makes him an interesting comparison to Wolverine: Lucas is, at once, charming and distant. He’s also sensitive and somewhat volatile. Considering these attributes, he links up quite well with Wolverine.

Still, whenever Marvel decides to move forward with an X-Men movie, it’s obvious they have a lot of options. They could line up the cast with a bunch of familiar faces, hoping to draw interest from the various fandoms that fandoms actors have built up, or they could take a chance on relative unknowns that will come to their roles without outsized associations. Based on all of the fan suggestions and art that’s been released, not to mention Jackman’s legacy with the character, the choice of who plays Wolverine is immensely significant.
