Wolverine’s Worst Redesign Got Rid of His Nose (Yes, Really)

The worst redesign Wolverineever saw, ironically, came from one of the most iconic moments in X-Men history, a fact oftentimes overlooked due to that infamous redesign being so ridiculous that it got rid of his nose. Wolverine is no stranger to body horror as the subject of torturous experimentation by the Weapon X Program that left his mind scrambled and adamantium grafted to his skeleton. However, little did Wolverine know, the experiments conducted on him unwittingly kept him from a worse fate, that of his own mutation, which only revealed itself after a traumatic experience in battle.

To understand how Wolverine lost his nose in Marvel Comics’ continuity (while fans still ponder as to why) it is important to look back at the event that sparked the transformation. In X-Men #25 by Fabian Nicieza, Andy Kubert, and Matt Ryan, the X-Men have decided to eliminate the threat of Magneto by any means necessary. Upon their confrontation, Wolverine attacks Magneto and delivers a devastating blow to the supervillain. In response, Magneto uses his powers to rip the adamantium from Logan’s body, leaving Wolverine mangled and completely immobilized.

When Magneto ripped the adamantium from Wolverine’s bones, Logan, as well as fans, learned that his signature claws weren’t given to him by Weapon X but were a part of his skeletal structure all along. Without the adamantium, Wolverine still had bone claws to use as his natural weapons in combat. While Logan was surprised to learn of his retained ability, that wasn’t the only change his body was undergoing after Magneto’s assault. Beyond removing one of the strongest metals in the Marvel Universe from Wolverine’s skeleton, Magneto also released the full potential of Logan’s mutation.

While trying to create the ultimate weapon, Weapon X also put a block on Wolverine’s powers by covering his bones in adamantium. Once the adamantium was removed, Wolverine began to regress into a feral beast, a state that was held back by the adamantium and was seemingly the final stage of his mutation. Wolverine’s mind became that of an animal’s, his face and body were reshaped into a beastly form, and, yes, he lost his nose. The shocking transformation was kicked into high gear after Apocalypse tried to reattach Wolverine’s adamantium while attempting to make Logan one of his horsemen. The procedure failed, and the de-evolution became complete, giving Wolverine the infamous look that scarred the minds of readers throughout the late ‘90s.

Marvel seemingly realized their design flaw and quickly (unceremoniously) undid Wolverine’s transformation. A few Wolverine issues after his new look was introduced, Logan took on his human form once again without any explanation as to why or how. While noseless feral Wolverine wasn’t received well by fans, it was undoubtedly an ambitious take on the character that fully embraced his animalistic nature, though it failed because it simultaneously abandoned all of the human aspects fans fell in love with in the first place. While Wolverine’s worst redesign got rid of his nose, the creative team behind X-Men made sure that didn’t last very long.
