You Season 3: Why Joe Hates Having A Son At First

You season 3 pulls off a twist, revealing that Joe and Love have a son, and there’s a reason that the former hates the news at first. Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg tries to move on from his serial-killing ways in the You season 2 finale. The episode ends with Joe and his serial-killing significant other, Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), moving to the suburbs and awaiting the arrival of their daughter. Joe believes he’s “ready to be the good father” he never had and make the family that he always dreamed of. However, his obsessions start to take over again after he spies on the new neighbor, hinting the suburbs won’t be the quiet family life that he and Love thought it’d be.

While Badgley and Pedretti return as Joe and Love, You season 3 adds several new characters into the mix. Michaela McManus plays Natalie Engler, Joe’s neighbor (and unfortunate new obsession). Of course, Joe’s plans could get more complicated with Natalie’s controlling husband, Matthew Engler (Scott Speedman), who lines every inch of their home with cameras. Love will have to deal with a different kind of problem. Shalita Grant joins the series as Sherry Conrad, the queen bee of the Madre Linda suburbs and an influencer who seems like she’s out to make Love’s life more difficult.

Heading into the You season 3 premiere, Joe believes his child will be a girl, but a twist leaves him in shock. In the opening moments, Joe’s narration shows that he’s nervous about becoming a father, saying he’s been in some harrowing situations before, but he could “really use a map” for this one. But his murderous wife, Love Quinn, is having the baby regardless, so he puts on a brave face until the doctor ruins everything with one revelation. “Congratulations, dad. It’s a boy,” the doctor says. Joe is stunned. He says he’s “fucked,” and so is Henry, his new son. And there are several reasons why.

Joe’s past shows why he wants a daughter. Both Joe and his mother suffered from abuse by his father, and it was bad enough that his mom even hid a gun for protection. A You season 2 flashback showed Joe using the weapon to kill his father and protect his mother. She tells him that “it had to be done.” Later in life, Joe suffers more abuse from men when Mr. Mooney (Mark Blum) locks him in a glass cell below his bookstore. Joe hates men, and he has a history of wanting to protect women. But, of course, he’d prefer a daughter over a son.

Also, Joe doesn’t want to raise a son to become like him. Netflix’s You makes it clear that Joe’s abusive childhood helped contribute to the person he became. Though Joe’s son obviously wouldn’t grow up the same way as his dad, Joe has no interest in letting another version of himself into the world. This, along with Joe’s resentment towards men, leads to him having a strained relationship with his son early in You season 3. Of course, Joe’s issues with Henry are all in his head, but that’s how most of the problems in the show start anyway.
