Zoo: Chloe’s Shock Death Explained

Here’s Chloe Tousignant’s shock death during Zoo season 2 explained. James Patterson is best known as the author behind the Alex Cross novels, and his work has received several high profile adaptations over the years. Morgan Freeman played Cross twice, in 1997 thriller Kiss The Girls and 2001’s Along Came A Spider. Freeman’s seeming reluctance to do more sequels led to a reboot with 2012’s Alex Cross, which cast Tyler Perry in the role; while plans were in place for Perry to return for an adaptation of Double Cross, it was scrapped when Alex Cross failed at the box-office.

Other James Patterson adaptations include CBS procedural series Instinct starring Alan Cumming and 2016 fantasy film Maximum Ride. In 2012 Patterson co-authored a book called Zoo with Michael Ledwidge, where animals raise up against mankind; Patterson later penned sequel novel Zoo 2. The book was later turned into a big-budget CBS series in 2015, starring Kristen Connolly (The Cabin In The Woods) and Billy Burke, and in a nice touch, horror icon John Carpenter scored the main theme.

Zoo lasted for three seasons before ending in 2017, and like the book, it was based upon, received mixed reviews. While it could be quite goofy, Zoo was guilty pleasure entertainment when it worked. A fan-favorite on the show was Chloe Tousignant (Nora Arnezeder, Army Of The Dead), a French intelligence analyst and one of the show’s lead characters. She became so important to the series the last thing viewers were expecting was her surprise death in Zoo season 2 episodes 5 “The Moon And The Star.”

Chloe’s fate was sealed in Zoo season 2 episode 4 “The Walls Of Jericho,” where she and the team infiltrate a fancy event led by General Davis, who heads the Noah Objective, which is a plan to kill the animals with a special gas. The team later finds this gas but when a canister explodes, Chloe and Dariela (Alyssa Diaz, Narcos: Mexico) have to make a run for it. Dariela is forced to seal a door behind her, leading Chloe to be fatally exposed.

Chloe is later recovered by the team in Zoo season 2 episode 5, but while it seems she might recover, she later succumbs to her exposure. Chloe’s death in Zoo was apparently done to shake up the dynamic of the main characters, as she was something of a calming center for the group. Her shock demise had a major impact on the story moving forward, though her presence was definitely missed for the remainder of the series.
